Our mission is to improve the medical industry for the betterment of all, including our LGBTQI brothers and sisters. We want to honor this Pride Month by being the best allies we can be and also acknowledging how much further our industry still has to go to support this community.
Health care is a human right, but many LGBTQI people still face discrimination that compromises their physical and mental health. This population is much more vulnerable than their heterosexual counterparts. Here are a few statistics to highlight the gravity of the issue:

Almost half (48%) of transgender adults have contemplated suicide in the past year.

LGB teens are five times as likely to attempt suicide compared to their heterosexual peers.

Almost a third (29%) of transgender people report having experienced unwanted physical contact from a healthcare provider, such as fondling, sexual assault and rape—and another 29% have been denied care because of their actual or perceived gender identity.

LGB teens are over three times as likely to experience rape than their heterosexual peers.

LGB teens are also twice as likely to be bullied and more than twice as likely to stay home from school to avoid violence.
These are just numbers. But they represent real people and the very real challenges they face. As professionals in the healthcare industry, we can make a profound difference in these people’s lives by holding ourselves and our colleagues accountable. We need to work together to combat the discrimination hurting this community.
Let’s celebrate this Pride Month by ensuring everyone has access to a life of health and happiness, no matter whom they love, how they love or what they need to do to love themselves.
